WARSAW, Poland – Two African elephants, Fredzia and Buba, have been prescribed CBD oil to support them mellow out. Though they say an elephant never ever forgets, zoo workers at the Warsaw Zoological Garden in Warsaw, Poland, are hoping CBD will support the elephants neglect their anxiety.
“We have began a project in the course of which we will verify the impact of CBD hemp oils on the mood of our animals,” the zoo announced.
The herd at Warsaw Zoo appears to be struggling with the loss of 1 of its members.
“To commence with, the system integrated Fredzia the elephant, who following the current death of Erna (the former head of the elephant herd) was a bit stressed and had a bit of difficulty acquiring her position in the herd,” the zoo stated.
For elephants, group dynamics are an significant aspect of their every day lives.
“Elephants are incredibly intelligent animals with extremely complex brains,” Warsaw Zoo zookeeper Patryk Pyciński stated. “They’re extremely social animals that are interdependent on each and every other and as a group, they generate a complex organism.”
Pyciński stated elephants generally struggle with the loss of a member for months or even years.
Warsaw Zoo veterinarian Agnieszka Czujkowska is overseeing the CBD initiative and stated it could take various months to establish if the CBD is operating. Czujkowska has currently administered CBD to dogs and horses.
The experiment could support other veterinarians and zookeepers. Simply because elephants are socially complicated, conflict and anxiety can generally arise amongst members of a herd.
“We would like to see how CBD oil—hemp flower extract—affects elephants. Like most zoos we do study [and] we monitor the level of anxiety hormones. Thanks to this we will know if the substances [will] support the elephants,” Czujkowska stated.
