2 charged in killing of LA marijuana dispensary worker

Los Angeles (AP) — Officials said Monday that they were charged with killing a Los Angeles marijuana dispensing worker whose body was found in a shallow grave in the Mojave Desert.

Juan Carlos Hernandez, a 21-year-old college student from South Los Angeles, disappeared on September 22, and his body was found in a remote area between Barstow and Baker about two months later.

Ethan Astafan, 27, of San Gabriel, was acquitted on Monday after being charged with murder, and Sony Tahen, 20, of Los Angeles, was acquitted of being an accessory after the fact.

They were each released on bail of $ 10 million.

If Astafan is convicted, he will face up to 25 years of life in a state prison. Hen faces three years in prison.

Authorities have not released any possible motives or other details regarding the killing.
